Interdisciplinary Health Sciences Curriculum & Student Affairs Committee
Minutes of February 16, 2001 Meeting
Present: Ball, Gilchrist, Johnson, Kanous, Kirchhoff, Noack, Spear
I. Acceptance of minutes of January 19, 2001.
II. Jason Morgenson, Med2—organizer of Spanish for the health professional course—met with the committee to discuss his excellent student-organized course in Medical Spanish for the accomplished Spanish speaker. There is currently faculty support and input, but the course organization is entirely student-fueled. Committee members gave Jason suggestions for ways the course could be sustained when he has moved into clinical rotations. There was discussion about Spanish as a continuing education course, as opposed to being part of the formal curriculum—the latter being more problematic to organize than the former, but not addressing the issue of the need to incorporate expertise in Spanish in the curriculum of health care professions students.
III. There were reports from committee members who had discussions with their
curriculum committees about the commitment to interdisciplinary education.
a) J Thompson discussed the medication use safety course in Pharmacy that is
aimed at pharmacy, nursing, and medical students as well as industrial engineering
students. Kathy Skibinski is the pharmacy course coordinator.
b) K Kirchhoff listed physical assessment as critical to the training of NP,
PA and medical students. She cited Carol Glassroth as a colleague who has great
interest in this curricular concern.
c) The medical school curriculum committee has five subcommittees that were
formed by Carolyn Bell. Informatics is the subcommittee that A Ball is involved
with along with Craig Gjerde and other colleagues.
d) There was committee discussion of the role of course-supervisor teaching
credit as a disincentive to interdisciplinary work. As it applies to the medical
school faculty, addressing the MAMA model is something the committee may need
to incorporate into its recommendations.
IV. Student Services Issues of Concern
a) Caregiver Law- S Spear presented his phone discussion with Nancy Lynch. There
are different circumstances for the various health sciences schools, which results
in differing applications of the law. Nancy Lynch is available to meet with
this committee or individual committee members to elucidate these issues.
b) TB Mask Fit Testing- the topic was left for future discussion.
