Interdisciplinary Health Sciences Curriculum & Student Affairs Committee

Minutes of April 20, 2001 Meeting

Present: Ball, Bell, Crouse, Gilchrist, Johnson, Kirchhoff, Nehls, Noack, Spear (Chair), Thompson

Guests: Judy Broad—UWHC Nursing Administration
Dr. Susan Skochelak—Associate Dean of the Medical School
Katie Huggett—Medical Scholars Program Coordinator

Dr. Byron Crouse was introduced as a replacement for Dr. John Beasley on the committee. Dr. Crouse gave a synopsis of his interdisciplinary work in Minnesota and said he was very excited to be continuing this work here in Wisconsin.

Assoc. Dean Susan Skochelak recounted the main events of Medical Education Day and gave praise to Dr. Jonas for his keynote speech and assistance with the accreditation self-study. Dr. Jonas felt that it was particularly useful to consider the challenges of having the students in “learning communities.”

S. Skochelak and Katie Huggett then gave a presentation on the architectural and room scheduling plans for the Health Sciences Learning Center.

-This facility can be a REVENUE builder—e.g., CME for profit

The 4th floor will house the CME Program and the Medical Education.
The 3rd floor will primarily be comprised of the Health Sciences Library.
The 2nd floor will have the Medical School.
The 1st floor will have the PA School.

The timetable for the HSLC is for building completion in 2003 with classes starting 2004.

B. Crouse noted that Wisconsin is ahead of the game in having a building that has the capabilities to promote interdisciplinary work.

S. Spear asked about the learning communities within the new building and S. Skochelak confirmed his thoughts that they are not interdisciplinary, they are separate by schools. She said that the powers-that-be decided to keep the disciplines separate for now, but this could change in the future.

B. Crouse asked if this school participated in National Primary Care Week, specifically the interdisciplinary aspect of it. Katie Huggett responded that we do—in October.

C. Johnson suggested that the committee consider meeting in the new Pharmacy building in June, if summer committee meetings are going to be held.

S. Spear asked the committee to think for the May meeting about recommendations to Sybil Better regarding the ways to enhance interdisciplinary learning in the HSLC.

The next meeting will be May 11th instead of May 18th due to graduation.
