Interdisciplinary Health Sciences Curriculum & Student Affairs Committee

Minutes of January 18, 2002 Meeting

Present: Ball, Gilchrist, Johnson, Kanous, Noack, Spear (Chair), Thompson, Zahner

Approved minutes of December 21, 2001 meeting with minor additions. It was mentioned that we did not account for the number of incoming veterinary medicine students in the tabulation of health sciences students on campus—this number was not known by members in attendance. Mike Pitterle was reported to be the manager of the listserve for the Pharmacy School. Lynn Maki is the keeper of the academic timetable for Pharmacy.

Lexington Report—the committee spent some time discussing how to proceed with the recommendations from the consensus report on blood-borne pathogen disease in health science students that was published in JACH in November
--There seemed to be agreement that a subcommittee of this committee or an ad hoc committee should be constituted to reflect on the Lexington Report and report back to this committee; include Vet School representatives
--Do the Lexington report’s recommendations reflect current practice at UW?
--Do any changes need to be made—in pre-clinical and clinical training?
--Point out discrepancies—suggest how they might be closed
--Need for check on what’s actually happening
--How should the report be used on this campus?
--Mary Hayney, Mikel Snow, and Marilyn Jenkins met—along with representatives of UHS—and gave this committee a report in 1998 on the blood-exposure and immunization protocols and standards in use on campus at that time
--Scott Spear will talk with Sybil Better about the composition of a revamped work-group and discuss whether or not these associate deans should be asked to be involved again at this point

Mask-fit testing for TB exposure prevention was also discussed—this topic was an agenda item for the committee a year or two ago and it was unclear to the chair if it had been resolved or was an active issue for the committee to address

It appears to be a moot point currently—if TB exposure is likely in a particular setting, the hospitals are apparently responsible for the mask-fit testing; but it may be worth determining if the health sciences schools see this as an existing concern

This led to a discussion about where “universal precautions” is taught in the curriculum?
--Clear with PA School that it’s a formal part of the curriculum
--Some question regarding Pharmacy, Medicine, and Nursing curricula
--Taught in curriculum or at clerkship site?—it is apparently an online program in Pharmacy that students are expected to review and to know
--The committee members agreed it is the responsibility of health sciences schools to make sure this information is given to trainees—but not clear how consistently this occurs

Proposed listserve activity was also discussed—present the Lexington Report and ask for input regarding faculty interest and activities in interdisciplinary education
--It was suggested that we expand the listserve to include an interdisciplinary website—could be located off the Health Sciences Library web page
--If it is active, we could include the website information in the listserve mailing—and post the report and existing interdisciplinary courses on the website with a link from the email; the Medical Informatics course is one such example
--Would we want website support to be part of the responsibility of the envisioned support position?
--There is apparently a $50 charge from DoIT to maintain a listserve—committee members suggested asking Dean May to support this fee

Members have mentioned that there are a number of connections between this group and the international health committee—invite Cindy Haq to a future committee meeting

There was additional discussion about a committee support person—likely an academic staff position, but needs to be determined; will consult with Dean May regarding such a position since she had mentioned having experience with this in B.C.
--Are there any other models for these type positions?—committee members will review the academic staff web site and obtain potential position descriptions prior to our next meeting; “instructional program manager” as one possible job title?

The next meeting will be February 15th in Rennebohm Hall Room 1042.

Jump to November 16 | February 15 | March 15 | April 19 | May 10
