Interdisciplinary Health Sciences Curriculum & Student Affairs Committee

Minutes of February 15, 2002 Meeting

Present: Ball, Boissonnault, Bowers, Gilchrist, Johnson, Krouse, Spear (Chair), Thompson, Zahner

Approved minutes of January 18, 2002 meeting.

Dean Katharyn May met with the committee to discuss her experience with interdisciplinary health sciences education at the University of British Columbia—where they have “faculties” instead of schools or colleges—and to discuss her vision for such activities at UW
--Nursing was in the faculty of applied science for many years at UBC
--Interdisciplinary health sciences building was built there in the early 70’s—constructed to drive interdisciplinary faculty process; called the IRC—Instructional Resource Centre
--Obtained funding for interdisciplinary activities coordinator of health sciences—initially a half-time position; person was housed in the IRC; central contact point; chaired the interdisciplinary committee; served as a champion for this curriculum with an administrative title; had a small budget and responsibilities for coordinating interdisciplinary activities; this individual had the power of influence more than actual control over curriculum
--Standing committees were responsible for the curriculum and the facility at UBC
--There was a combined graduate student association for medicine, nursing, pharmacy and other graduate students at UBC, not separate entities
--Health sciences council—consisted of the heads of programs at UBC; sought to incentivise faculty; dusted off courses that had been interdisciplinary in the past and created new ones:
----Health care ethics course—old course
----Course on AIDS research, education and care—new
----Professional/patient/society course—new
----Health policy course—new
--Time intensive, but felt to be valuable; all were elective except for P/P/S course, which was mandatory for medical students
--Lots of social activities conducted by and for students; professional poster sessions were held by health sciences students association; distinguished student lecture given each semester; lecture series also existed that was under control of students
--Health care team competition each year—included a faculty volunteer mentor; teams developed interdisciplinary plan of care for practice case studies; four teams of nursing, pharmacy, medical and allied health students each competed to develop care plans in 15 minutes; seen as effective in bringing these groups together
--Eventually developed academic structure—college of health professions at UBC; a virtual college; other virtual colleges existed on that campus; interdisciplinary activities of faculty were related to that college—stood for something of value with tenure committees

Ideas from Dean May for UW-Madison:
--New HSLC building can be seen as a catalyst
--Accreditation in the future will require more evidence of interdisciplinary activities
--Committee should work to pressure units to protect a 2-hour space each week for interdisciplinary committee activities as well as interdisciplinary courses
--Medical students wanting AIDS course at UBC drove timetable developers there; clinical rotations as another option for stimulating such activity at UW
--Coordinator role—instructional specialist (academic staff) vs. faculty person supported by other schools; could be a rotating position every 2-3 years if we decide to go the faculty route
--This committee could take a leadership role regarding programmatic activities in the HSLC; what can we do with the open spaces to encourage an interdisciplinary perspective?
--Need student representation regarding programmatic use of HSLC
--Get deans and associate deans in a room with members of this committee (with medical foundation representatives) to present demands: timetable accountability; interdisciplinary courses; council to run the HSLC; faculty level position with support who reports to the provost
--This committee should serve as the “midwife” to give birth to the plan
--Talk of a “fifth division” at UW but apparently not happening anytime soon
--Invite John Gilbert from UBC to come meet with people on this campus
--Development of MPH degree program will have interdisciplinary connections
