Interdisciplinary Health Sciences Curriculum & Student Affairs Committee
Minutes of March 15, 2002 Meeting
Present: Ball, Boissonnault, Bowers, Johnson, Kanous, Kirchhoff, Noack, Spear (Chair), Thompson, Zahner
Approved minutes of February 15, 2002 meeting.
Nancy Diekelmann—lecturer in the School of Nursing—met with the
committee to discuss her interest in research on nursing education; how do teachers
teach and learners learn?—specifically as these questions apply to nursing
--Practice-based curriculum initially; teaching preparation issues—only
seven schools on campus have formal courses in teaching
--Need to present the science of education in the health sciences—practice
education that is based in the needs of the health sciences
“Narrative pedagogies”—difference in classroom and clinical
approaches; outcomes or competency approaches
Outcomes approach—what goes into the course; how do you decide what to
leave out or never teach? “Critique the exam instead of taking this exam”
Feminist pedagogies—communities we create in teaching; teaching by sharing
stories; ask students to write their stories; students don’t have a clue
what teachers do
Course name change in nursing education course; cross-list and co-teach with
others
Prospective course attendees—graduate students, teachers, preceptors,
fellows, post-docs
Issues—instruction, curriculum development, clinical instruction, practica;
clinical teaching is often by examples
Nancy’s looking for a grant for this work
Interest in cross-listing this course—letter of support would be needed
from this committee; might suggest that Nancy write a draft of what such a letter
would need to state for the committee to review and approve
Barbara Bowers—interest in peer evaluation in nursing; sort of a faculty
development issue; UW teaching academy as a resource; needs to be discipline-focused
as well
New pedagogies—how is testing related to knowledge? Valid and reliable
test created on a subjective experience; reaching the limits of memorization
New focus on teaching the discipline at Stanford
Cindy Haq’s international health committee is moving forward; cluster hire around global/international health was approved; house new faculty members in HSLC
