Health Sciences Curriculum and Student Affairs Committee

Interdisciplinary Health Sciences Curriculum & Student Affairs Committee

Minutes of January 17, 2003 Meeting

Present: Ball, Banning, Boissonnault, Craig Gjerde (Guest), Johnson, Kanous, Rosa, Spear (Chair), Thompson, and Zahner

Approval of Minutes: The December 20, 2002 meeting minutes were approved.

Update on Interdisciplinary Health Web Site and List-Serve:

Per a report by Andrea Ball, the Web site has not changed significantly. It was decided that posting the work groups should be delayed for now. It is more important that the criteria be developed first and foremost. The new/updated charges that were received from the Health Sciences Council will be posted on the Website.

Andrea is still doing a literature search on interdisciplinary topics, examples, etc. There is a magnitude of information available and she is compiling some reviews, critiques of other programs and other educational information for development of interdisciplinary criteria for review by the committee. A bibliography of references (with available links) will also be added to the Web site.

Update on Activity of Timetable Group:

Judy Thompson will coordinate a meeting of the following: Carolyn Bell and/or Laura Dast from the Medical School, Jeff Nicholson and/or Jerry Noack from the PA Program, Lisa Steinkamp (Physical Therapy), William Heiss (Social Work), and representatives from both Nursing and Occupational Therapy.

Some specific information needed from the above group is:

- How long and when is the protected timeslot?
- How many credits will be assigned to the designated courses?
- Which program levels should be included in the timetable decisions at this point?

Discussion on Developing Specific Criteria to Review Interdisciplinary Course Submissions (Craig Gjerde, GUEST):

Craig provided a handout “Ideas on Interdisciplinary Curriculum Design and Assessment,” which he will provide electronically to Andrea for posting on the Web. He briefly discussed the most important topics including: Guidelines for Planning, Definitions that Clarify Practice, Support for an Interdisciplinary Curriculum, Definition of Interdisciplinarity, Implementation Assumptions, Defining Elements and Working Definition of Interdisciplinarity.

The group found this information and ensuing discussion quite informative and clarifying. The committee members collectively identified the following goals/objectives specific to Interdisciplinary skills that need to be developed (i.e. these are specific items that need to be addressed as the criteria is being developed). They are as follows:

- Pre-requisite disciplinary knowledge needs to be clear, as does the primary content base.
- What are the agreed upon criteria requirements?
- Which disciplines are appropriate for course inclusion?
- Linkage with other interdisciplinary courses needs to be stressed.
- Course(s) should be designed as an interdisciplinary course or experience.
- Justifiable purpose in teaching concepts in an interdisciplinary way should be clearly and explicitly stated and the content should be described.
- A reflection component should be included as well as an active learning component.
- For example: How (Why/Why Not) does Ethics, public health issues, end of life issues and case management fit into these criteria?

Miscellaneous:
- Craig Gjerde is willing to be invited back in the future to assist with developing interdisciplinary criteria, Pilot Program, etc.
- Andrea Ball will contact Nancy Sugden regarding possible grant funding or other resources that might be available to further assist in this interdisciplinary process.
- The issue of faculty development is critical to the success of inter-D health sciences curricular activities. Might the UW Teaching Academy be of some assistance?
- Clarify committee membership with Sybil Better—would Health Sciences Council recommendations about student and Social Work membership begin this academic year or were they intended to begin in Fall 2003?

The next meeting is scheduled for Friday, February 21, 2003.
