Interdisciplinary Health Sciences Curriculum & Student Affairs Committee
Minutes of December 20, 2002 Meeting
Present: Boissonnault, Crouse, Gilchrist, Kanous, Kirchhoff, Rosa, Spear (Chair), Thompson, Zahner
Approval of Minutes: The November 15, 2002, meeting minutes were approved with the following correction: Byron Crouse was present.
Future Activity of Interdisciplinary Health List-Serve:
There has not been much activity on the list-serve. Suggestions on how to change
this include:
--Put the IHSC Meeting Minutes, Committee Summaries and the Annual Reports
on the list-serve.
-- The IHSC could put out a campus wide message to introduce the list-serve
and it’s purpose.
-- Post issues regarding Inter-D time slots and course credits and ask for feedback.
-- Ask other Inter-D groups for information that they would like to have posted
on the list serve.
-- Committee members could post comments that would serve to establish and frame
the discussion for others on campus.
S. Spear will send out instructions on how to subscribe to the list-serve, as well as the Web-site address. And will find out how many people are currently subscribed to the list-serve.
Goals and Activities of the Nascent Interdisciplinary Health Web site:
--Follow up with Andrea regarding an update on the Web site.
-- Find out what challenges or obstacles need addressing.
Committee discussions:
Identify a current list of classes/courses that are truly interdisciplinary.
A graduate nursing student (Amy Miller) last completed this task in 1997 and
there was a considerable amount of work involved in compiling the information.
Perhaps there is a student available during the upcoming summer who can take
the list from 1997 and update it.
Is there any grant funding available to assist with this project? The entire
interdisciplinary concept intertwines with the Wisconsin Idea. A cluster hire
might be possible if there is enough scholarly work involved.
Develop specific identifying criteria for such courses. A summary of general
criteria was included in the last annual report. The IHSC committee should define
courses versus competencies.
Are there existing examples of shared criteria for interdisciplinary learning
experiences that have already been developed?
Suggest asking Mark Albanese for assistance in developing criteria. Mark has
been investigating interdisciplinary health sciences teaching models.
Develop mentoring networks with other disciplines.
Discussed the working group topics elucidated at November meeting—clinical
challenge competition, community projects/clinical experiences, exploring grant
resources, faculty development, criteria development—and agreed that all
are worthy of further exploration, but criteria development is the most pressing
priority to address.
Future directions:
Obtain 5-10 articles regarding interdisciplinary health sciences education
for review by the IHSC members. This may help to develop a consistent knowledge
base for all committee members from which to develop interdisciplinary criteria.
Will ask Andrea Ball to help obtain such a reading list.
Invite Craig Gjerde to the next meeting for his input regarding interspecialty
education and ask him for assistance in developing criteria.
Check with the Waisman Center and the VA Hospital for interdisciplinary criteria.
The next meeting is scheduled for Friday, January 17, 2003.
