Committee issues Committee composition settled and approved pending final nomination letters from the Health Sciences Council. E. Bersu identified Christopher Schmidt as a possible medical student rep on the committee. M. Bumann announced that the Interdisciplinary module will have first outing November 17 Committee members were reminded that the Call for Courses had has been sent and everyone who received a cover letter was urged to send out to the faculty of their own department and other interested parties. B. Bowers, M. Bumann, B. Crouse were nominated and approved for the Course proposal review subcommittee. Discussion of how course approval for inclusion in the timetable occurs, what course numbers to assign, whether to have a special timetable section with heading Interdisciplinary Courses, cross listing, how best to highlight courses A. Barclay asked about a role for the libraries, as a resource, or as incorporation into the courses themselves, for informatics, evidence-based medicine, help with research, creation of a library module related to interdisciplinary course work, etc? There was a suggestion to incorporate the library resource as a component of the IHSC Module Progress on the Brown Bag Series: E. Bersu said that he, Wm. Heiss and B. Crouse will be meeting the end of November Course evaluation: M. Bumann & J. Banning waiting to hear from Mark Albanese, considered an authority in evaluation, J. Peterson also mentioned that each school/department might have its own specific evaluation format/set of questions Student Affairs: Another charge to this committee generated an extended discussion including: medical excuses for absences:, fluFlu-mist Mist put to restshould not be given to health sciences students on clinical clerkships:, honesty issues, professionalism issues, and changing campus policy in dealing with academic and personal student infractions:, a campus-wide policy, no longer left to the individual schools to settle problems within the confines of own situation Is there a code of conduct or an ethical standard for the professional schools? Is there a campus code of conduct? Would it extend to clerkships and clinical assignments? Who is responsible to make adjustments in these circumstances, the preceptors, students, patients? S. Spear mentioned that there is a remarkable incidence of eating disorders among the medical and nursing student population, and many other mental health problems among the general student population:, “sicker students than in previous years” Suggestion to take these and other student affairs issues to the students themselves Reminder of the importance of documentation in these cases B. Crouse announced that Cindy Haq will be appointed as Assistant Dean of International Studies, an interdisciplinary program whose faculty and/or staff may require representation on the IHSC committee as well. Inviting Cindy Haq to meet with the committee in the near future is suggested B. Crouse reported from interaction with West Virginia Interdisciplinary medical group that “if you don’t have funding, don’t bother.” In addition to finding funding sources, J. Noack mentioned that “we may have to learn to teach in new ways,” such as web-based using different teaching strategies, and, what the students are given to read as preparation for class presentations has to matter or contribute to the class experience (not be redundant, or unnecessary).
